How to choose backup power
Three numbers decide which system fits your home: how much energy you need to store, how much power you need at once and how you will recharge it.
1. Capacity (kWh)
How long the battery can keep things running.
- 1-3kWh: phones, laptops, CPAP, a fridge for several hours
- 4-8kWh: essential circuits through a typical outage night
- 10kWh and up: whole home backup and multi-day outages
2. Output (W and voltage)
How much power you can draw at the same time.
- 2,000-3,600W at 120V: kitchen appliances, tools and RVs
- 4,000-7,200W at 120/240V: well pumps, dryers and central AC
- 12kW and up: whole home loads and EV charging
3. Charging and expansion
How the system refills and grows.
- Solar input: more watts means faster recharging
- Generator or wall: backup charging when the sun is down
- Expansion batteries: add capacity later without replacing the unit
